Student Research and Development

Students have been an integral part of the LEGS-PT program since it began. The program still serves as an educational opportunity for engineering students at LETU. The LEGS leadership hopes to expand the program, as a Global Service Learning opportunity for students who are dedicated to doing life-changing work. A large portion of the LEGS PT work has been in the research and development of its M1 knee. The team has worked meticulously over the past five years, researching, refining and developing a prosthetic knee that gives first world functionality at low-cost for developing nations.  The LEGS PT team consists of juniors and seniors who dedicate at least 10-20 hours a week of their personal time to work for LEGS PT. Since its inception in 2005, there have been at least 60 students who have participated in the LEGS PT program, with about 10-12 student per year. As the LEGS program has grown with the addition of such programs as visual literacy and Small Plot Irrigation, the number of students involved in a global initiative increases as well. This includes students from many different disciplines, including Biology, English, Education, and Business. The LEGS program offers a unique opportunity for students to learn in a real-world environment, combining their dedication to scholarly pursuits with a higher calling to serve.
